Cabinet Back Country Horsemen hail from the far northwest corner of Montana. Or mission is to perpetuate use of horses in the back country; assist government agencies in maintenance and management of the resource, and educate and encourage public participation in wise and sustaining use of horses in the back country. Most of our volunteer service is conducted on the Libby, Troy and Cabinet Ranger Districts of the Kootenai National Forest. The three Ranger Districts have almost 1150 miles of trail, including more than 30 trails in the Cabinet Mountain Wilderness, and 55 miles of the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail.
With almost 40 years of service, the Cabinet BCH have cleared and maintained over 2000 miles of trail, packed tons of gear, mapped and treated noxious weeds, planned and constructed the Sheldon Horse Trailhead outside of Libby, installed fencing and horse corrals at the Upper Ford, Bull River and Fairview Ranger Station rentals, and installed a stock addition complete with feeders and corrals at the Pleasant Valley Campground south of Libby.
We offer educational clinics including Defensive Horse Safety, Saddle Fitting, Equine Packing, Leave no Trace Camping, General Equine Nutrition and Care, Hoof Care and Equine First Aid. We work closely with, and support other horse user groups and our members and cook trailer are a hit at many fund raisers and community events. Cabinet CBH welcome potential members and visitors to any of our work, educational or recreational activities. We offer trail work and other work activities for all ages and experience levels and you don’t need to own stock to be a member. All you need is an interest in helping keep forest trails open and accessible for all users. Consider joining us if you want to work hard, meet other equine enthusiasts, learn more about trails and back country stock use, spend quality time with your stock, attend clinics, or just enjoy good food and company by the bonfire.
