Volunteer organizations like the JBBCH are critical for assisting the U.S. Forest Service in identifying trail hazards and aiding in trail maintenance. Members of the JBBCH who participate in trail clearing are required to complete a number of recommended safety certifications. All JBBCH members are provided these optional levels of training by the club free of charge. Certifications include Chain Saw, Defensive Horseman and First Aid/CPR.

Beyond the required certifications, JBBCH hosts additional proactive educational clinics and demonstrations for its membership throughout the year for improved safety awareness in the backcountry. Training subjects include trail etiquette, equine first aid, weather awareness and safety, camping with livestock, knot tying, packing demonstrations, basic and advanced equitation and general equine psychology.
