Judith Basin Chapter of Montana Back Country Horsemen

March 4, 2024

Education: One of the best ever! Linda and John Westby furnished pizza for all and we got to just visit.! It was very much appreciated. Lisa Lucas brought cookies for dessert.  Thank you all so much!

Attendance: Lisa Lucas, Candy Phillips, Leonard Francis, Gregg Morse, Rose & Lance Dover, Dick Buscis, Laura & Brad Fogle, Gene Couch, John & Linda Westby, Ron & Barb Holland, and visitor Kenton Cripps. 

Call to order: VP Lisa Lucas. President Rosalie was home sick. 

Previous meeting minutes: Approved

Treasurers Report: Rebecca was not able to attend but did send a full report. Beginning balance was $14,364.76, ending balance is $13, 753.74. Treasurer Rebecca Santavy checks our post office box often, more membership money has been arriving.

Correspondence: Rosalie and Gregg have been contacted by Tammy McNally from Iowa who plans to come  ride in Montana possibly in the Snowies and the Little belts in the months of August and September. They are going to stay in contact with her.  Honora Tetrault, the Saddle Club Queen who helped us at the Stick Horse Rodeo, texted Rosalie a thank you for the $100 our chapter sent her.

Judy Fossum Secretary forwarded an email from John Chepulis, BCH National Director, with information about a free web seminar on March 7 regarding National Trail Day which is June 1st. The title of the seminar is “Giving Back to the Trail and Building Community During National Trails Day.” Also forwarded was the Bob Marshall Complex 2024 Newsletter which contains information about their annual Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) public meeting and information-sharing. Scheduled is an  in- person meeting at Hungry Horse Ranger Station on April 6, 2024.  Keni Hopkins, BCHMT secretary and Judy have been in communication via email and telephone to update our director and officer list. Nancy Pollman, who oversees the BCHMT and BCHA membership list, and me have been in communication to get our membership list current.

Focal Reports:  Trail Work:  Linda Westby sent the Forest Service Agreement around for signatures. Defensive Horseman renewal will be the education portion of the April meeting. She’ll coordinate with Shaaron Gottardi regarding the topic cards. The “fun” arena work will take place at an outside arena as soon as weather permits.  First Aid renewal is scheduled on April 10th at the Sheriffs Complex beginning at 5:00 PM. Jessica Goodheart will be the instructor once again. If you’re interested, please contact Linda Westby. Persons working on the trails are required to be certified although other members are encouraged to take the training. The chapter covers the cost for chapter members.

Tail Rides: The annual campout is scheduled for June 14-16th with the main ride on Saturday the 15th. We normally ride up Arch Coulee if conditions permit. It is a five hour ride. There are several other choices for shorter rides on all the days. Henry Gottaradi, Dick Buscis and Gene Couch are looking into making a tent frame for the ‘chapter’s tent.  Future education topics. If you have ideas, please contact Rosalie. She is going to investigate having FWP give a presentation on Bears vs Horses and maps for our trails.

Newsletter: Judy will try to put info in this that occurs after, or outside of, the meeting. We offer a free classified section if you want to sell buy or give away items. Need not be horse related.   Unfinished Business The first ever JBBCH scholarship was presented and approved. The scholarship committee met on March 1st to finalize the application form and the scoring rubric. Applications are due May 1, 2024 and will be scored by   the committee.  items.  Sharing the Trails: Rosalie reported that she has signed the contract with the Fairboard for use of the Pavilion. We’ll have more information at the April meeting.  New Business: Tina Catencamp is stepping back this year so we need a new Website Coordinator. She has the folder with the information and will share her knowledge with anyone who is willing to step up and take on this task. We already have a website within the BCHMT site so we would just like a member to keep it updated. Please let Tina or Rosalie if you’re interested in more information.  State Director Report: Senior director Leonard Francis reported that nationwide BCH members have contributed $13 MILLION to in-kind work

Board of Directors: No recent meetings President/Officer Report: Mentioned in other information Other business: Candy Phllips shared information of her Grand Opening of White Mule Enterprises (Bull Mountain Trading)store  in Roundup on April 6th from 9:00AM to 5:00 PM. Please contact Candy via FB, email or phone for more information.  She sells new and used tack plus other Made in Montana or at least Made in the US products.  Adjournment at 8:00 PM.

April Education will be the Defensive Horseman classroom work as previously mentioned under the Trail Work section.
